Effective Project Scheduling with Microsoft Project

This 2-day course teaches the fundamentals of using Microsoft Project to create a project schedule.  The course is geared towards the novice user of Microsoft Project who wants to learn the basics of creating a project schedule.  This course covers setting up a new project, working with major task views and tables, creating a task list, establishing dependencies, fixed duration and work effort, assigning and modifying resources, project networks, creating the schedule baseline, and tracking project performance. Includes a class book for each student.  This is a hands-on course and each student is required to bring a laptop with Microsoft Project 2000 or later.

  • Creating the Work Breakdown Structure

  • Creating the schedule baseline

  • Tracking/updating project schedule

  • Understand how to set up a new project using the defaults

  • Understand which fields in the Project Information Dialog Box and Properties Sheet to update when establishing a new project

  • Understand how to create an organized task list using the phases and milestones established a methodology

  • Understand the importance of indenting (tasks/subtasks)

  • Understand dependency types and how to establish dependencies among activities

  • Understand the work formula (work = duration x units)

  • Understand the fixed duration task type and how to use it

  • Understand effort driven scheduling

  • Understand how to assign resources

  • Understand how Microsoft Project calculates the project end date

  • Understand the critical path and how to manage activities on the critical path

  • Understand a schedule baseline and the importance of creating it

  • Understand when to change the schedule baseline

  • Understand how to enter actual duration/actual work

  • Understand the interaction of actual work/actual duration, remaining work/remaining duration and percentage complete
